Raw power, precision engineering, and an unrelenting drive to break records—this is what defines Commandos Racing’s latest project. This Nissan Patrol VTC isn’t just another drag build; it’s a statement. Built to push the limits of naturally aspirated performance, this machine is the result of expert craftsmanship, cutting-edge modifications, and a relentless pursuit of speed without compromise. In partnership with Rip Speed Team, and with the support of Top Performance and Lucas Oil, we have created one of the most extreme naturally aspirated Nissan Patrols to ever hit the strip. This is a build that you do not usually see; at least I have never seen it. This build is something totally new to this photographer and journalist. This vehicle is totally different from any Nissan SUV that you will see here in the United States. The goal of this build is to break the world record and be the fastest NA SUV in the world, we believe they can and will own that record.
This SUV is engineered strictly for naturally aspirated speed and power. This is not your dad’s daily driver. this build is well thought out and all modifications were put together to optimize the this 2020 Nissan Patrol VTC was built with a singular goal: to dominate the naturally aspirated drag racing scene. In collaboration with Rip Speed Team, we engineered this vehicle to push the boundaries of what a naturally aspirated V8-powered Patrol can achieve.
Unlike forced-induction builds, this project focuses purely on raw mechanical power, high-revving performance, and precision tuning. Every component was selected and refined to maximize power-to-weight ratio, traction, and reliability on the strip. Commando Racing is determined to set new records in the naturally aspirated category, and this build is a testament to that commitment. Let’s get into the modifications of this monster

Chassis & Suspension Modifications
A powerful engine is only as good as the chassis and suspension that support it. Suspension components make the difference between a good run and a great run. Thanks to our friend Eng. Bader Al-Sharshani, who performed a unique modification to the Nissan’s chassis and suspension setup, we were able to achieve a flawless balance between strength, stability, and weight transfer.
To maximize traction and ensure the best launch possible, we utilized Race Strange components throughout the setup. Key upgrades include:
• Custom lightweight chassis reinforcement to enhance structural integrity while keeping overall weight to a minimum.
• Race Strange adjustable shocks and coilovers, specifically tuned for drag racing to optimize weight transfer.
• Upgraded suspension geometry, engineered for improved squat and rear-end grip under acceleration.
• Strange Engineering heavy: duty rear axle components, ensuring durability under extreme torque loads.
• Custom roll cage, designed for both safety and weight efficiency while meeting racing regulations.

With this optimized suspension setup, the Patrol maintains exceptional traction at launch, ensuring that all 700+ HP is efficiently transferred to the track.
Engine & Drivetrain
At the heart of this build is a naturally aspirated V8 LSR block, meticulously tuned for maximum performance without forced induction. Unlike turbocharged or supercharged competitors, this engine delivers linear power, instant throttle response, and high RPM durability.
Engine Specifications & Upgrades:
• V8 LSR aluminum Block: Precision-built for high-revving, naturally aspirated power.
• Custom high-lift camshaft: Optimized for aggressive valve timing, increasing airflow and power.
• High-flow cylinder heads: Ported and polished to enhance combustion efficiency and reduce restrictions.
• Forged internals: Strengthened crankshaft, rods, and pistons to handle extreme loads and prolonged high-RPM operation.
• High-performance exhaust system: Designed for maximum scavenging effect and minimal back pressure, improving horsepower output.
• Custom intake manifold: Engineered for optimal air distribution, enhancing throttle response and top-end power.
• Holley Engine Management System: Provides precise control over fuel injection, ignition timing, and data logging for peak efficiency and performance

Transmission & Power Delivery:
• TH400 Automatic Transmission: Chosen for its durability, fast shifting capabilities, and ability to handle extreme power levels.
• Custom Torque Converter: Optimized for launch control and seamless power delivery.
• Lightweight Driveshaft & Upgraded Rear Differential: Built to withstand high torque loads and ensure efficient power transfer to the rear wheels.
Every component in the powertrain was selected to create an ultra-responsive, high-revving, and durable racing machine.

Aerodynamics & Weight Reduction
While the Nissan Patrol is naturally a heavy platform, weight-saving modifications were crucial to achieving competitive ETs. We focused on strategic light weighting while maintaining structural integrity.
• Carbon fiber panels in key areas to reduce weight while maintaining strength.
• Minimalistic interior setup, removing non-essential components to achieve an optimized power-to-weight ratio.
• Aerodynamic tuning, including drag-reducing elements, to maximize high-speed stability.

The result is a lightweight, high-powered machine capable of delivering exceptional quarter-mile performance.
