In 2025, No. 46 has turned 46. BMW M has the perfect present for BMW enthusiasts. It marks the birthday of nine-time motorcycle world champion Valentino Rossi. He is also the current BMW M Motorsport Italian works driver. “The Doctor” himself was personally involved in the design process behind the two versions, both of which are limited to 46 cars each. The world-famous number, which is Rossi’s trademark, features prominently in several places on and inside the BMW M4 CS Edition VR46 – including on the doors and the carbon fiber-reinforced plastic (CFRP) roof.
“There is no other brand that has motorsport so deeply rooted in its DNA as BMW M. I am proud to be a BMW M works driver, and to share this passion. The fact that there is now a special VR46 edition, in which I was involved from the very beginning of the design process, makes me proud. When I see the BMW M4 CS Edition VR46 out on the road or on the racetrack, it will be very cool. Valentino Rossi says this about the edition and the collaboration with BMW M.

Exclusive BMW Individual paint finishes and special exterior and interior details.

The BMW M4 CS Edition VR46 differs from the BMW M4 with its two exclusive BMW Individual paint finishes. These finishes blend perfectly with the visible carbon surfaces, such as the hood contours.
The BMW M4 CS Edition VR46 variants offer two unique color schemes. One option is a Marina Bay Blue metallic finish, with both sides adorned with a huge 46 in darker Tanzanite Blue metallic. The other is a Frozen Tanzanite Blue metallic matte finish, featuring the 46 in Frozen Marina Bay Blue metallic on both sides. The BMW M kidney grille surround and a V spoke on the forged M light alloy wheels come in vivid Sao Paulo Yellow, with the latter indicating the position of the tire valve stem. In addition, accent stripes over the door frames of the Marina Bay Blue metallic cars are also painted in the special yellow color. Brake calipers are painted bright yellow and bear an M logo, are another nod to the iconic Rossi color. The carbon roof is painted by hand, just like the sides of the car. It is adorned with a large VR46 logo in yellow and a Valentino Rossi autograph. The trunk lid features VR46 lettering.
The yellow accents continue in the interior of the BMW M4 CS Edition VR46, which features Black/Night Blue Merino leather M Carbon bucket seat with Sao Paulo Yellow Alcantara shoulder area accents. The headrests, like the door sills, feature a prominent yellow VR46 logo. The three-spoke, flat-bottomed M Alcantara steering wheel comes with yellow contrast stitching and a yellow center marker at 12 o’clock position. The carbon center console features a special VR46 edition pad.
Six-cylinder in-line engine producing 543 hp.
The beating heart of the BMW M4 CS Edition VR46 is the high-revving 3.0-liter, six-cylinder in-line engine with M TwinPower Turbo technology, which was designed for the track. The maximum boost pressure of 30.5 psi from the two mono-scroll turbochargers and model-specific tweaks to the engine management mean the special-edition model power plant generates 543 hp, which is relayed to the smart M xDrive all-wheel drive system and the active M differential via an eight-speed M Steptronic transmission. The spontaneous power development and optimized traction allow the car to accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in 3.2 seconds, and from 0 to 124 mph in 11.1 seconds. The top speed of the special-edition model, which comes standard with the M Driver’s Package, is electronically limited to 188 mph.
Contributing to the excellent engine response is a model-specific engine mounts with increased spring rates. A rigid connection exists between the power plant and the vehicle’s structure. This enables direct transmission of power to the drivetrain. This occurs every time the driver presses the accelerator. The oil supply system is designed for track-specific challenges. It can handle consistently high revs. It also manages extreme lateral acceleration. The engine’s power delivery comes with a stirring emotive soundtrack. This is generated by the dual-branch exhaust system. It features electrically controlled flaps and a titanium rear silencer with weight-minimizing design. In customary M fashion, it has two pairs of tailpipes painted in matte black.
Model-specific chassis tuning and control systems.
The chassis technology of the BMW M4 CS Edition VR46 has been precisely tuned to the performance characteristics of the engine. It is also tailored to the intended use of the vehicle and its weight distribution. The individually tuned axle kinematics and bespoke wheel camber settings optimize steering precision. Dampers, auxiliary springs, and anti-roll bars ensure effective transmission of lateral control forces when cornering. They also enhance spring and damping response and improve wheel location. The electronically controlled dampers of the adaptive M suspension likewise come in a model-specific set-up, as does the electromechanical M Servotronic steering with variable ratio, and the integrated braking system.
46 – The trademark of an exceptional racer.
The number 46 has accompanied Valentino Rossi throughout his entire extraordinary racing career. It has become even more of a trademark than his nickname “The Doctor” or “Il Dottore”. Having seen his father Graziano Rossi race motorcycles with this start number, Valentino Rossi opted for 46 from the start of his career – and never swapped it for the number 1, as is the right of a current world champion.
Rossi claimed his first world title in the 125cc motorcycle class in 1997. Two years later, he added a 250cc class title. In 2000, he took the step up to what was the top Grand Prix category, the 500cc class, in which he was crowned world champion in 2001. The following year, this category was replaced by the MotoGP class, and Rossi remained the dominant force. By 2005, he had added a further four world titles. Numbers eight and nine followed in 2008 and 2009. With these nine world championships, he has cemented his status as a top motorcycle racer. He boasts no fewer than 115 Grand Prix victories. As one of the three most successful motorcycle racers in history, he is a global motorsport and style icon. VR46 has become a worldwide trademark – and Rossi’s hometown of Tavullia, has even reduced the inner-city speed limit from the regular 50 km/h to 46 km/h in his honor.
BMW M Motorsport works driver since the start of 2023.
When the curtain fell on his motorcycle career at the finale of the 2021 season, Valentino Rossi turned his attention solely to automobile racing. He had already attended multiple tests in Formula 1 race cars. He also made guest appearances in rallies and endurance races. Since the start of the 2023 season, he has been a BMW M Motorsport works driver. He competes behind the wheel of a BMW M4 GT3 for BMW M Team WRT. He races in series including GT World Challenge Europe and the FIA World Endurance Championship (FIA WEC). He also participates in the 24 Hours of Le Mans (FRA). At the start of the month, Rossi finished runner-up in the Bathurst 12 Hour (AUS), the opening round of this season’s Intercontinental GT Challenge (IGTC).
