SEMA Garage Detroit: Designated CARB(California Air Resources Board) As An Independent Emissions Lab

This is big news for the Detroit garage, and for SEMA. This designation is not one that is given to any emissions lab. As of 2024 there are only 14 Independent Vehicle Emissions Testing Labs in the United States. Two of those designations belong to SEMA. The other lab is in Diamond Bar, California. These two labs can perform light-duty tailpipe emissions testing. Confirmation came from (CARB) the the Detroit facility is properly equipped for automotive exhaust emissions testing. Yes, it is official the Detroit Lab is also a qualified emissions lab. “We’re excited to receive this recognition from CARB,” said Mike Mohacsi, Vice President, SEMA Product Development and OEM Relations. “Now both of our Garages in Detroit and Diamond Bar are fully recognized by CARB, enabling us to serve more of our member companies throughout the country.”

Both the Detroit and Diamond Bar main mission focuses upon development and certification of components made by aftermarket companies. Ben Kaminski, who is the General Manager of the SEMA Garage Detroit said “We are two of the only recognized labs in the country with this specific focus.”

Recognition from CARB enables SEMA to better assist its membership by offering certification-level automotive exhaust emissions testing to help members develop products that can be sold all over the country. Testing is a vital role in the CARB Executive Order process, especially products that can have an impact on vehicle emissions. Support from SEMA helps manufacturers test efficiently, develop, certify, and bring products to the marketplace quickly.

The SEMA Garage Detroit opened in 2022 and has a lot to offer: A multi-million dollar facility, Comprehensive services, competitive pricing, cutting-edge emissions tools, assistance in procuring vehicles, and real-time observation of testing by the different manufacturers. The SEMA Garage Compliance Center is also instrumental in helping manufacturers from start to finish of the CARB application process. With SEMA assistance the process is streamlined going through regulatory approval. The Detroit Garage also provides an Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) Center and offers OEM measuring sessions, scanning services and advanced tools and equipment.

SEMA has gotten more than seven hundred CARB EO’s for its members. The SEMA compliance and emissions teams are a full-time staff that guides members in going through the CARB EO application and testing requirements, they also offer support in communication with CARB in every step of the way.
